Celanex® PBT

Processing
Celanex PBT is supplied in plastic or multiwall bags. Before processing, the material should be dried to achieve optimum molded-part properties. The moisture content of virgin material and regrind to be processed should not exceed 0.02%. Higher moisture contents lead to hydrolytic degradation of the melt and to a deterioration in the mechanical properties, particularly toughness, of the moldings. The processing machine feed hopper should be closed during the processing operation; heating the hopper can be an advantage.

Structure
Celanex PBT is a series of semi-crystalline thermoplastic polyesters on the basis of polybutylene terephthalate. PBT is produced by a melt polycondensation process applied to terephthalic acid dimethyl ester with 1.4 butanediol.

Properties
Celanex PBT renders a combination of highly useful qualities:

  • high hardness and impact strength
  • good creep properties
  • high heat-resistance especially of the glass-fiber reinforced types (operating temperature up to 140 °C)
  • favorable sliding and abrasion behavior
  • high dimensional stability (low thermal expansion coefficient, low water absorption)
  • good electrical properties
  • good chemical resistance
  • no stress cracking
  • good weathering resistance
  • fast crystallization, resulting in shortest cycle times
  • paintability
  • flame retarding if equipped accordingly (UL 94 V-0, partly 5 VA)
  • UV resistant if equipped accordingly

Grades
The diversified Celanex PBT program includes basic types for injection-molding and extrusion, glass-fiber and glass-spheres reinforced grades, grades with flame retarding additives, also glass-fiber reinforced as well as glass-fiber/mineral reinforced grades, UV-resistant grades and blends.

Applications
Celanex PBT is preferred for the manufacture of high-quality and high-stress molded engineering parts: in the areas of electric and electronic engineering, in the automobile industry and for household appliances. In precision mechanics and in the machine construction sector Celanex PBT is used as a raw material for cogwheels, bearings and other sliding elements. It has proved to be an especially suited sliding partner for acetal copolymerizate Hostaform POM.
